Ο Richard Fearless των Death In Vegas στο ClockSound.gr

Μιλήσαμε την Πέμπτη το μεσημέρι με τον μεγάλο Richard Fearless των Death In Vegas ενόψει του Plisskën Festival, στο οποίο εμφανίζονται σήμερα 3 Δεκέμβρη και 2η ημέρα του φεστιβάλ. Αποτελούν τους headliners και είναι τιμή μας που ο Fearless μας έδωσε τη δυνατότητα μέσω Skype να τα πούμε.

 

Kostis Grimanis: Γεια σου Richard! Ευχαριστούμε που δέχτηκες να παραχωρήσεις συνέντευξη στο Clocksound, λίγο πριν την εμφάνιση των Death in Vegas στο Plisskën Festival το Σάββατο [03/12/2016].

Richard Fearless: Παρακαλώ! Ευχαριστώ για την πρόσκληση και συγγνώμη που έπρεπε να αλλάξουμε την ώρα της συνέντευξης. Έχω πραγματικά πολύ γεμάτο πρόγραμμα σήμερα και έπρεπε να είμαι στο στούντιο τον περισσότερο χρόνο.

 

K.G: Κανένα πρόβλημα. Καταλαβαίνω ότι αυτές οι μέρες είναι πολυάσχολες για σένα. Εμφανίστηκες ξανά στην Ελλάδα το 2012. Ποια είναι η άποψή σου για τους φαν, για το κοινό σου; Ποιες είναι οι τωρινές σου προσδοκίες;


R.F.: Η Ελλάδα είναι πάντα ένας από τους προορισμούς που επιθυμώ να επισκεφθώ και να παίξω. Και πάντα, οι εμφανίσεις μου έχουν επιτυχία. Θα τα σπάσουμε το Σάββατο!

 

K.G: Σίγουρα θα τα σπάσουμε! Και νομίζω ότι και οι φαν σου περιμένουν να σε δουν εδώ και καιρό. Γνωρίζεις το Plisskën Festival; Έχει ξεκινήσει εδώ και 4-5 χρόνια και όλοι οι μουσικόφιλοι το θεωρούν αν όχι το τοπ, σίγουρα ένα από τα τοπ alternative underground φεστιβάλ. Τι έχεις να πεις γι’ αυτό, έχοντας κατά νου ότι εσύ και η μπάντα σου είστε έμπειροι μουσικοί; Θεωρείς ότι συμμετέχετε σε ακόμη «ένα-από-τα-ίδια» φεστιβάλ ή πιστεύετε ότι θα είναι κάτι εντελώς διαφορετικό και καινούργιο;

R.F.: Για να είμαι ειλικρινής, πήρα την απόφαση με αφορμή αυτό το άλμπουμ. Θεωρώ την εμφάνισή μας με αυτό το άλμπουμ πολύ σημαντική. Πριν από αυτό το άλμπουμ έπρεπε να ξανασκεφτώ πού βρίσκονται οι Death In Vegas (DIV). Ήθελα οι DIV να κάνουν πάλι τη διαφορά.

Κατά καιρούς, πιεστήκαμε να καταπιαστούμε με πράγματα που δεν μας ταίριαζαν. Ήθελα αυτό που θα δημιουργήσουμε να είναι συναρπαστικό και αυτός είναι ο λόγος που εμφανιζόμαστε στο Plisskën. Είναι μια ευκαιρία να συνδεθώ περισσότερο με το παρελθόν μου, να αξιοποιήσουμε αυτήν την ευκαιρία κι όχι απλά να την εκμεταλλευτούμε ως μια ευκαιρία που απλώς θα μας κάνει να βγούμε στη σκηνή και θα ασχοληθούμε με τα παλιά μας τραγούδια.
Στην τελευταία μου περιοδεία σκεφτόμουν ότι δεν θέλω να βγω και να κάνω το ίδιο. Δεν θα ασχοληθώ με αυτά που έκανα 5 χρόνια πριν, παρά μόνο αν βγει κάτι πολύ δημιουργικό και συναρπαστικό στο νέο setup. Είναι μια νέα αρχή για την μπάντα. Μιλάμε για κάτι εντελώς καινούργιο, έναν επαναπροσδιορισμό του εαυτού μου και της μπάντας. Δυστυχώς δεν μπορώ να σκέφτομαι με βάση το κοινό μου όταν κάνω μουσική, δεν μπορώ να το κάνω, είναι πολύ πιεστικό. Θέλω να κάνω πράγματα δημιουργικά και συναρπαστικά ακριβώς όπως τα έχω στο μυαλό μου.

 

K.G: Καταλαβαίνω, βασικά, αυτή ήταν και μία από τις ερωτήσεις μου. Ήθελα να σε ρωτήσω τι θεωρείς ότι φέρνει ξανά τους DIV στο προσκήνιο και μόλις μου απάντησες πολύ ωραία. Αναφορικά, λοιπόν, με τον δίσκο που ετοιμάζεις αυτή τη στιγμή, μπορείς να μας πεις λίγα λόγια;

R.F.: Εννοείς τους δίσκους που φτιάχνω;

 

K.G: Νομίζω ότι σε άκουσα να λες ότι ετοιμάζεις ένα νέο άλμπουμ. Καλά κατάλαβα;

R.F.: Είναι αστείο! Ό κόσμος θεωρεί ότι έχω κάνει διάλειμμα 5 χρόνια, ενώ κατ’ ουσίαν δουλεύω πολύ σκληρά στο στούντιο 5 μέρες την εβδομάδα με αποτέλεσμα να έχω στα χέρια μου περισσότερη μουσική από αυτήν που μπορώ να κυκλοφορήσω. Αλλά αυτό δεν έχει να κάνει τόσο πολύ με τους δίσκους όσο με την ίδια τη φύση της μπάντας. Το Transmission (2016) δημιουργήθηκε με πολύ διαφορετικό τρόπο σε σχέση με οποιονδήποτε άλλο δίσκο που έχω φτιάξει μέχρι στιγμής.
Ο τρόπος που λειτουργεί το στούντιο και γενικά όλα είναι πολύ ρευστά και περίπλοκα. Τις προηγούμενες ημέρες κάναμε πρόβες για το Plisskën, τα πάντα στο στούντιο αφορούσαν τα live και τα sequences. Αφήσαμε τον υπολογιστή στην άκρη, και δουλέψαμε το άλμπουμ για χάρη των ζωντανών εμφανίσεων. Ποτέ δεν δουλεύαμε, όμως, έτσι με τους DIV. Με τους Black Acid ήταν κάπως έτσι, αλλά οι Black Acid είναι άλλη ιστορία. Με τους DIV διαλέγαμε το καλύτερο υλικό και συνεργαζόμασταν με κόσμο, για παράδειγμα, αν θέλω ντραμς, θα βρω ντράμερ και όλα δούλευαν ρολόι, το ίδιο και οι συνεργασίες μας.
Σε αυτό όμως το άλμπουμ όλα γίνονται αυθόρμητα, κάτι που δεν μου έχει ξανασυμβεί. Είναι βέβαια συναρπαστικό και επηρεάζει το label και νιώθω ότι για πρώτη φορά, ο Richard Fearless, οι DIV και η δουλειά μου συνδυάζονται όλα μαζί, παρά σκορπίζονται εδώ κι εκεί. Πρόκειται λοιπόν για κάτι που έχει πραγματικά ουσία, μετά από 20 χρόνια. (γέλια)

 

K.G: Τέλεια! Αυτή ήταν μία ακόμη από τις ερωτήσεις μου, αν δηλαδή υπάρχουν άλλα πρότζεκτ που τρέχουν παράλληλα με τους DIV, σε προσωπικό επίπεδο.

R.F.: Ναι, υπάρχουν. Υπάρχει ένα μεγάλο καλλιτεχνικό πρότζεκτ εδώ και δύο τρία χρόνια που αποτελεί κομμάτι της εμφάνισης καθώς και η έκθεση του πρότζεκτ που θα γίνει την επόμενη χρονιά. Θα είναι τα visuals των DIV για του χρόνου. Αυτό λοιπόν είναι ένα μεγάλο καλλιτεχνικό πρότζεκτ μαζί με τις κυκλοφορίες της Drone Records. Όλα δείχνουν απίθανα και είμαι και εγώ ενθουσιασμένος για αυτά που θα γίνουν την επόμενη χρονιά.

 

K.G: Ίσως, λοιπόν παρουσιάζεται μια ευκαιρία για την Drone Records να κάνει τις επαφές της με το Plissken φέτος και να προωθήσει μερικούς από τους καλλιτέχνες της και για τα επόμενα χρόνια του φεστιβάλ.

R.F.: Το απίθανο με την Drone είναι ότι, για πρώτη φορά, σε λίγες εβδομάδες θα συμμετάσχουμε στο Tresor Meets Drone. Δεν είναι η πρώτη φορά, αλλά σίγουρα θα είναι η πρώτη φορά που το οργανώνουμε με τόσους δικούς μας καλλιτέχνες μαζί με τον Steve Bicknell (Lost) και εμένα. Ο Steve είναι παλιός αγαπημένος, και όπως καταλαβαίνεις αυτό θα είναι το επόμενο βήμα για να την Drone, να αναλάβει δηλαδή περισσότερες διοργανώσεις και καλλιτέχνες. Πιστεύω, λοιπόν, ότι αυτός είναι ο τρόπος για να αποκομίσεις κέρδος σε μια εποχή που οι δίσκοι δεν πουλάνε. Με την Drone δεν κάνω απλά το κέφι μου, είναι ένα πρότζεκτ ζωής, αυτή είναι η δουλειά μου: το να σκέφτομαι πώς όλο αυτό το σύστημα θα δουλέψει με έναν μη εμπορικό και μη συμβατικό τρόπο και παράλληλα με δημιουργική και συναρπαστική προσέγγιση.

 

K.G: Φυσικά, και εφόσον παραμείνεις πιστός στις αρχές σου, αυτό σίγουρα θα το εκτιμήσουν οι φαν. Τι θα ήθελες να πεις στους φαν σου στην Ελλάδα πριν από την άφιξή σου στην Αθήνα; Τι να περιμένουν από σένα αυτή τη φορά ή θα τα κρατήσεις όλα για έκπληξη;

R.F.: Ελπίζω ότι θα εκτιμήσουν αυτό που προσπαθούμε να δημιουργήσουμε. Νομίζω ότι εξαρτάται από το τι θέλουν να αποκομίσουν από αυτή την εμπειρία οι φαν μας. Αν θέλουν να μας ακούσουν στα παλιά μας τραγούδια, θα απογοητευτούν. Πιστεύω ότι αυτή τη στιγμή, η περφόρμανς που δίνουμε είναι πολύ πολύ δυνατή και όλοι πρέπει να έρθουν με ανοιχτό μυαλό.

 

K.G: Νομίζω ότι τα άτομα που έρχονται σε τέτοιου είδους φεστιβάλ αποζητούν την έκπληξη από τους καλλιτέχνες. Αναμένουν να ακούσουν και να βιώσουν κάτι νέο, γι’ αυτό πιστεύω ότι θα βρεθείτε στο σωστό stage.

R.F.: Πόσες μέρες διαρκεί το φεστιβάλ;

 

K.G: Δύο μέρες.

R.F.: Γνωρίζεις ποιοι άλλοι παίζουν το Σάββατο;

 

K.G: Πολλές μπάντες. Αν δεν κάνω λάθος, θα είναι οι Tuxedomoon οι headliners της Παρασκευής, και εσείς του Σαββάτου.

R.F.: Πότε παίζουν οι La Femme;

 

K.G: Νομίζω το Σάββατο, αλλά δεν είμαι απόλυτα σίγουρος. Θα έχεις το χρόνο να τριγυρίσεις στην Αθήνα ή φεύγεις αμέσως μετά το φεστιβάλ;

R.F.: Δυστυχώς, την επόμενη μέρα. Κάθε φορά που έρχομαι έχω φίλους που μου λένε ότι πρέπει να μείνω και να επισκεφθώ τα νησιά. Αυτή τη φορά θα φάω μέχρι σκασμού (γέλια), αλλά δεν τα καταφέρνω όταν έχω live. Θα έρθω λοιπόν πάλι στην Αθήνα και θα φύγω νηστικός, φταίει η ένταση που έχω (γέλια), αλλά σίγουρα ανυπομονώ.

 

K.G: Θα ήθελα να σε ρωτήσω μερικά ακόμη πράγματα και μετά θα σε αφήσω να συνεχίσεις τη δουλειά σου. Όταν ηχογραφείς στο στούντιο, έχεις κάτι συγκεκριμένο στο μυαλό σου ή μήπως πρόκειται για μια δημιουργική διαδικασία που το συζητάς με τα μέλη της μπάντας και κάθε ένας από εσάς εκφράζει τις ιδέες του και τζαμάρετε; Πώς λειτουργεί όλο αυτό συνήθως;

R.F.: Αυτή τη στιγμή όλη η μπάντα είμαι εγώ και ο τεχνικός. Ο Chris παίζει τα synths στους DIV και αυτό που τείνει να συμβεί με τα περισσότερα τραγούδια είναι ότι υπάρχει μια κεντρική ιδέα… (ακούγεται ένας εκκωφαντικός ήχος)
Το άκουσες αυτό; Υπάρχει μια χαλυβουργεία εδώ, που αποτελεί πηγή της έμπνευσής μου. Στον πρώτο και στον τελευταίο δίσκο υπάρχουν ήχοι από το εργοστάσιο. Ήθελα να τους ηχογραφήσω, γι’ αυτό έβγαλα έξω το μικρόφωνο και κατέγραψα τον ήχο της μετακίνησης των μετάλλων και είχα την ιδέα να το βάλω σε αυτό sequence. Έτσι, βασικά, έχουμε την ιδέα για το τραγούδι και όλα γίνονται live μέσα από τα tape delays, έπειτα προβάρουμε την εκτέλεση και, στη συνέχεια, πατάμε μία φορά το record για την εγγραφή. Τα πάντα είναι live. Κάνουμε πρόβες μια μεγάλο χρονικό διάστημα ξανά και ξανά και έπειτα κάνουμε την εγγραφή. Έτσι ό,τι ακούτε είναι σε μια προσπάθεια. Αυτό δεν το κάναμε παλιά, παρά μόνο με τους Black Acid, ό,τι ηχογραφούσαμε ήταν σε μια εκτέλεση, σε μία προσπάθεια.

 

K.G: Όταν λοιπόν δημιουργείτε νέα μουσική, σκέφτεστε πώς θα ακουστεί στο live;

R.F.: Παλιά έκανα αυτό το λάθος, αλλά πλέον δεν θεωρώ ότι είναι αποτελεσματικό να σκέφτεσαι πώς θα ακουστεί στο live, πώς θα το δεχθεί το κοινό, τι θα σκεφτεί. Πιστεύω ότι αν κάποιος αποβάλει όλες αυτές τις σκέψεις από το μυαλό του, θα κάνει τους καλύτερους δίσκους.
Πρέπει να μένεις αποκλειστικά στη στιγμή. Και για να είμαι ειλικρινής, για να ακουστεί αυτό το άλμπουμ live είναι δύσκολο. Όταν το παίξαμε live στο φεστιβάλ jgk το κάναμε ολόκληρο μαζί με την Sasha.

 

K.G: Εννοείς την Sasha Grey;

R.F.: Ναι, το εκτελέσαμε μαζί ολόκληρο και ήταν πολύ δύσκολο, αλλά και πάλι ήταν μαγικό, γιατί ουσιαστικά, μεταφέραμε τη στουντιακή έκδοση σε live επάνω στο stage, κάνοντας μίξεις και προσπαθώντας να το αναδημιουργήσουμε, κάτι που ήταν εξαιρετικά δύσκολο.

 

K.G: Μπορώ να το φανταστώ…

R.F.: Τρομάξαμε όταν είδαμε τον κόσμο να τα σπάει. Είναι πολύ αγχωτικό να βγει σε live αλλά αξίζει τον κόπο η πρόκληση.

 

 

K.G: Δεν θέλω να σε στρεσάρω κι άλλο, αλλά θα είμαστε σε αναμονή της περφόρμανς σου το Σάββατο. Σου εύχομαι καλή τύχη και ελπίζω να τα σπάσεις, όπως είπες. Και κάτι τελευταίο, υπάρχουν σχέδια για συνεργασίες με άλλους καλλιτέχνες, τραγουδιστές, μουσικούς για το επόμενο πρότζεκτ σου;

R.F.: Όχι, δεν υπάρχει κάτι στα σχέδιά μου. Με την Sasha τα πράγματα είναι διαφορετικά. Βασικά, όταν δουλεύω με κάποιον θέλω να τον νιώθω μέλος της μπάντας, ακόμη κι αν είναι guest ή κάνει τα φωνητικά. Με την Sasha θα κάνουμε κι άλλα πράγματα, θα κάνουμε σόου τα οποία ελπίζουμε να ανακοινώσουμε αυτή τη χρονιά, πρόκειται όμως για διαφορετικές περφόρμανς, είναι κάτι άλλο. Αυτό που θα δείτε στην Αθήνα, το τρέχον σόου, είναι αυτό που κάνουμε στα τελευταία φεστιβάλ, είναι οι DIV, γιατί οι DIV είναι μια μπάντα που συνεχώς αλλάζει, έτσι θέλω να πιστεύω. Άρα, η μόνη συνεργασία που μάλλον θα κάνω θα είναι ως παραγωγός. Μ’ αρέσει να συνεργάζονται με ανθρώπους και τις μπάντες τους, και μάλιστα πολλοί μου ζητούν να κάνω την παραγωγή τους, αλλά δεν υπάρχουν πολλοί με τους οποίους θα ήθελα να συνεργαστώ ως παραγωγός. Ενδιαφέρομαι για διάφορους και συζητάω μαζί τους. Επίσης, θα γράψουμε μουσική για soundtrack στο στούντιο.

 

K.G: Αυτή ήταν μία από τις τελευταίες μου ερωτήσεις. Ο τελευταίος δίσκος μας δίνει την αίσθηση ότι πολλά τραγούδια των DIV έχουν ακουστεί σε ταινίες και άλλο περιεχόμενο. Μπορείς να μας πεις περισσότερα για τα μουσικά soundtrack και τα λοιπά;

R.F.: Η αλήθεια είναι ότι αυτό ήθελα να το κάνω εδώ και χρόνια, αλλά δεν έχει υπάρξει το κατάλληλο σενάριο. Ή μάλλον, φτάσαμε πολύ κοντά δύο φορές, με δύο πρότζεκτ. Το ένα ήταν ένα έργο της Ντάϊαν Άρμπους. Επικοινώνησε μαζί μου ο σκηνοθέτης, είχε μια καταπληκτική έμπνευση για μένα, όταν ήμουν νεότερος. Έμοιαζε με το πρότζεκτ των ονείρων μου, αλλά δυστυχώς οι παραγωγοί άλλαξαν γνώμη κόντρα στις επιθυμίες των σκηνοθετών. Το ίδιο συνέβη και με μια μεγάλη ταινία αλλά…

Υπάρχει ένας τύπος από την Wrap Records που πλέον είναι στη Universal. Πάντα κυκλοφορούσα από την Universal αλλά πλέον έχω το δικό μου label, την Drone. Εξακολουθώ, ωστόσο, να συνεργάζομαι εντατικά μαζί τους και τον τύπο από την Wrap. Ψάχνουμε για το κατάλληλο πρότζεκτ, αλλά ακόμη δεν έχουμε κάνει πολλά. Γενικά, αφιερώνομαι σε αυτό που κάνω, οπότε και στην περίπτωση του soundtrack και του σεναρίου, πρέπει να είναι το κατάλληλο για μένα, έτσι ώστε να τα δώσω όλα και να είμαι χαρούμενος. Περιμένω απλώς την κατάλληλη στιγμή και σίγουρα θα έρθει. Υπάρχουν πολλοί παράγοντες που μπορεί να χαλάσουν μια κατάσταση, αλλά σίγουρα θα γίνει κι αυτό.

 

K.G: Εύχομαι να κάνεις όλα σου τα σχέδια πραγματικότητα. Μια τελευταία ερώτηση: Θα έλεγες ότι ο Richard Fearless και οι DIV είναι σε καλή φάση αυτή τη στιγμή;

R.F.: Πολύ καλή. Νιώθω δημιουργικός και μάλλον αυτή είναι η καλύτερη στιγμή για την μπάντα. Μιλάω για την μπάντα αλλά η μπάντα είμαι εγώ ο ίδιος, αλλά ποτέ δεν το σκέφτηκα έτσι. Όταν κάνω έναν δίσκο με τους DIV, πρέπει να σκεφτώ διαφορετικά. Δεν μπορώ να το εξηγήσω, είναι κάτι πολύ φυσικό το να μπεις σε αυτή την κατάσταση. Ο λόγος που μου πήρε τόσο χρόνο για να κάνω αυτόν το δίσκο, είναι γιατί δεν ήμουν στην κατάλληλη φάση, όλα έχουν το τίμημά τους, αλλά πιστεύω ότι αυτός ο δίσκος είναι απόλυτα δημιουργικός και είμαι πολύ περήφανος γι’ αυτόν και για το γεγονός ότι εμφανιζόμαστε σε αυτού του είδους τα φεστιβάλ. Για το Richard Fearless, τρέχει ήδη εδώ και δύο χρόνια η Drone και το Tresor πρότζεκτ και όλα αυτά τα υπέροχα πράγματα που θα κυκλοφορήσουν την επόμενη χρονιά. Είναι παράξενο, γιατί ξεκίνησα το DJing ξαφνικά στα είκοσί μου και τώρα έχω δύο μικρά παιδιά και παίζω έως τις 6 τα ξημερώματα και μετά παίζω με τα παιδιά μου, αλλά όλο αυτό μου αρέσει.

 

K.G: Σου δίνει ενέργεια, έτσι δεν είναι;

R.F.: Εννοείται, είναι δύσκολο ορισμένες φορές να κάνεις πράγματα μόνος σου, χωρίς να πλαισιώνεσαι από μεγάλη ομάδα ή άλλους ανθρώπους, αλλά αυτό σε κάνει να στέκεσαι γερά στα πόδια σου, αυτός είναι ο αγώνας, η ίδια η μάχη.

 

K.G: Όμως τελικά έχεις την ελευθερία να ακολουθήσεις ένα δημιουργικό μονοπάτι που το διάλεξες εσύ ο ίδιος, κι έτσι λαμβάνεις την ανταμοιβή στο τέλος.

R.F.: Ακριβώς

 

K.G: Και κάτι τελευταίο, καθώς αναφέρεις συνεχώς το άλμπουμ, να περιμένουμε νέες κυκλοφορίες τους επόμενους μήνες;

R.F.: Υπάρχει ένα νέο single που, επειδή το θέλουμε σε βινύλιο, έχει καθυστερήσει. Είναι απίστευτο, αλλά ίσως γνωρίζεις ότι για να τυπωθεί ένα βινύλιο, το συζητάμε 4 μήνες. Όταν θα είναι έτοιμο, θα έχουμε τη νέα κυκλοφορία. Υπάρχει ακόμη μία κυκλοφορία αλλά δεν μπορώ να πω περισσότερα. Δύο κομμάτια των DIV που δεν έχουν καταγραφεί ποτέ σε βινύλιο, θα κυκλοφορήσουν, αλλά υπάρχουν κι άλλες κυκλοφορίες με τους DIV και ακόμη περισσότερες του Richard Fearless, καθώς και οι κυκλοφορίες της Drone που θα ακολουθήσουν.

 

K.G: Σ’ ευχαριστώ πολύ για το χρόνο σου, ως φαν αλλά και εκ μέρους του ClockSound.

R.F.: Να προσέχεις. Τα λέμε!

Kostis Grimanis: Hello Richard and thank you for accepting Clocksound's invitation for an interview with you, prior to Death In Vegas performance at Plisskën festival this coming Saturday.

Richard Fearless: You are welcome! Thank you for inviting me and sorry for having to change the time of our interview but I have a busy schedule today and had to be in the studio for the most part.

 

K.G: Not a problem. I understand that you must be keeping busy these days. You have played in Greece in the past (2012). What was your impression of the fans, the audience. Any expectations this time round?

R.F.: It's always been a place to look forward to come and play and the shows have always been received quite well. Hopefully we're gonna smash it on Saturday.

 

K.G: I think you will and I think the fans have been waiting for you to come back for a long time now. Are you familiar with Plisskën fest? Because it's been running for the past 4-5 years now and people perceive it as one of the most, if not the most, we would say, alternative underground music festivals. How does that make you feel, because the band and yourself are seasoned musicians, is it just another music festival that you've been invited to play or do you view it as something entirely new?

 

R. F.: To be honest I made a decision with this album but I kind of... This is like a bigger question but to me it was very important with this record. Before I made this record I had to do a real rethinking about where I saw Death In Vegas (D.I.V.) and I wanted (D.I.V.) to feel like relevant again.
I feel like when we were trying to be pushed by people around us wasn't where I wanted the band to be and I wanted it to creatively be exciting and this is the reason we're doing this fest. It is a choice to connect more to my past as an artist and kind of to pursue that side more, than just neccecary to take the offer that's been offered on the table, to go out and do a lot of old songs.
To me when I toured last time it was like "I don't wanna do this anymore" this is five years now I'm not gonna take it out unless it feels creatively exciting for me so this is part of this new set up that I'm bringing, It's a very fresh new start for the band. It feels like a new band on this one. I've constantly done this with the band and reinvented it more for myself, I sadly can't think about the fan basis when I make music, I won't do it, it's too much pressure, I want to make it exciting and relevant to where I am in my head.

 

K.G: Ι understand, it was actually one of the questions I wanted to ask you. What do you think makes D.I.V. relevant again? You actually put it very nicely in your previous answer. So with regard to the record that you're making at the moment can you tell me a little bit more about it?

R. F.: The records I'm making?

K.G: You said that you've got an album in the making if I understood correctly.

R. F.: It's funny cause people think I take these big breaks for five years, but I work five days a week really hard on the studio and I've got more music than i can release. But it's not quite what I meant (with the records). What I meant is with how I'm doing the band. This album [Transmission, 2016] was made differently to any album I have ever made. The way the studio is running now is everything is a bit of a mess cause we were rehearsing for the past days for Plisskën.

Everything in the studio is running live and sequences and the computer is not used and the record, the album was put down in a series of performances and live takes and I've never worked in this way with D.I.V. - with Black Acid I did but Black Acid is a different story - but with D.I.V. is always been more like of layering top thing where i bring in people depending on "I need drums, I'll bring a drummer into it" and this way it's working great and people come with us but I had to make it.

But with this album it has a certain spontaneity which I don't think I've coped before and it's exciting. And it's kind influenced with what I'm doing with the record label and I feel like for the first time Richard Fearless, D.I.V., my art works seem to be coming closer together for the first time rather than being these despair projects like I'm doing this I'm doing that, it's kind of making sense finally after 20 years. (laughs)

 

K.G: Excellent. That was another question that I had for you, if theres any other projects running concurrently with DIV on a personal level?

R. F.: Yes there's a big art project which has been going on for a couple of years that's part of the show and some of the work of this exhibition which is gonna be next year, is gonna be in the visuals next year for D.I.V.. So this is a big art project and also all the Drone [Drone records - his publishing company] releases which are all looking really exciting.. I'm really excited for next year..

 

K.G: So maybe there is an opportunity for Drone records to connect with Plissken this time and promote some of the artists and for next years festival as well.

R. F.: I mean what's cool about Drone is we are giving for the first time now in a couple of weeks we're doing a Drone meets Tresor - not my first but the first time I've curated the whole night with artists like myself and Steve Bingal from Lost - he's a bit of an old hero of mine - so you know this is like the next step for Drone is step into curating more, So i guess this is how for me in days of non selling records this is how you monetise it all ,Because Drone is not like a vanity project this is my life this is my job. Trying to think how to make it all work and to do it in a non commercial traditional sense and to make it creatively exciting.

 

K.G: Of course and if you stay true to yourself this is something that the fans will appreciate at the end of the day. Any messages that you would like to convey to the fans prior to your arrival in Ahens ? Anything you would like to say to them?Anything that the fans should expect this time around or is it gonna be a surprise?

R. F.: I just hope that they can appreciate what we're trying to do creatively. I think it depends on what people want to get out of it. If people want to see us do a lot of old songs they're gonna be disappointed. I think the show at the moment is really really strong and I think you have to go to the show open minded.

 

K.G: I think that people who tend to come to these festivals expect to be surprised by the artists and they expect that they're gonna hear, that they're gonna experience something new so I think that you have connected with the right plaform to do that.

R. F.: How many days is the festival?

K.G: I'ts gonna be two days

R. F.: Do you know who else plays on Saturday?

K.G: Theres a lot of bands. If I'm not mistaken Tuxedomoon are playing on Friday, you and those guys are the headliners.

R. F.: La Femme? When are they playing?

K.G: I think on Saturday as well, but I'm not entirely sure. Will you have the time to stick around to Athens or will you be heading back immediately after the fest?

R. F.: The next day unfortunately, every time I come to Athens I have friends and they say you must stay you must take a ferry to the islands but I'm gonna try and eat my self silly (laughs). I can't eat when I do a show so maybe I will come to Athens and leave hungry, again it's my intensity (laughs) but I'm looking forward to it.

 

K.G: I just wanted to ask you a couple more things and then I will let you carry on with your work. When you write -record in the studio do you have any particular idea in mind or is it like a creative process where you discuss it with the band members and each of you guys bring in different ideas to the table and just jam it out? How does it normally work?

R. F.: At this moment the band is me and the engineer that's it.And Chris he plays synths in D.I.V. now and what tends to happen is most of the songs just have an idea [strong sound coming from outside] Did you hear that noise? That's a steel factory.. It runs here and I got lots of inspiration on this. And on the first and last record (names) there are sounds from the factory. I wanted to record it so i put the mic out and record the metal being moved and i had an idea like i wanna put this part over this sequence .so basically we'll get the idea for the song and everything is running live via the tape delays and then what we do is we practice and practice the performance for like the day and then press recording for once .the whole thing is completely live ,we practice for a long time and practice going through it and through it record it in one take so what you hear is one take. Which i haven't done before ,except from black acid which was recorded in one performance one take.

K.G: So when you create new music do you have in mind how it will be played live?

R.F.: I've made that mistake before but I think its not a good thing to think howsgonna be played live, how its going to be received by the audience whats everyone gonna think about it I think if you get those things out of your mind you make the best records. I make the best records.
You have to stick purely about the moment .and to be honest to do this album live is been really hard and when we performed I at jgk festival we performed it with sasha in its entirety.

K.G: You mean Sasha Grey?

R.F.: Yeah and she performed with us at eternal? And it was a very hard thing to do and again it was very magical causewe re basically taking live the studio onto the stage so mixing the album trying to recreate the album doing it kind of live made it really hard.

K.G: I can imagine..

R.F.: So we looked too scared at people freaking out the stage, so its really stressful to do live but it's also the challenge that makes it worth.

 

K.G: i don't want to stress you out more but we are going to be in anticipation for your performance on Saturday so the best of luck with that i hope you come and you smash it as you said.one last thing ,have you got any plans like working with other artists, singers, musicians for your following project?

R.F.: No, there's  nothing like this going on .you know with Sasha its a different kind of thing because hmm basically i don't want collaborations if i work with someone i want to feel like they're part of the band even if its a guest or a  vocalist or..with Sasha we re doing more staff we re doing a few shows which hopefully we will be announcing this  year but they are different performances its a different kind of thing.what were taking to Athens - the current show- is what we've done in the last few festivals ,so its div, cause div is a continuing changing thing i guess .
so the only collaboration i will be probably be doing is as a producer. I'm totally for working with  people and their bands and a lot of people ask me to do the production for them  but there s not many people i really wanna produce.there is few people I'm interested and talking to..Also scoring thats something which is gonna be big part of the studio.

K.G: That was also one of my last questions.cause we get that feel from the last records.a lot of div songs have featured in films and everything.can you elaborate a bit more about musical scores and everything?

R.F.: The honest truth is that it's something I've wanted to do for years but the right script hasn't come along. It has actually twice. Twice there's been two projects that didn't happen there was one diane arbus film, I was contacted by the director -he's a great inspiration for me when I was younger and this was like a dream project and unfortunately the producers changed their minds against the directors wishes and this has happened in another big film as well but.. 

There's a guy from Warp records who's now gone to Universal - I've always been published by Universal but now i have my own publishing company Drone - and I still work closely with them and this guy from Warp films we're looking for the right project but I can't put so much in anything I do and whether it's perceived well or not I put a lot of myself into it and with the score the script everything has got to be right for me to throw and if I'm not happy with it, I'm just waiting for right moment fingers crossed it will come along. There was one thing last year and it was going yo be amazing until it happens I have to be.. There are always so many factors that could fuck it up. It will happen .

 

K.G: I hope that you do everything that you're planning to do. One last question. Would you say that Richard Fearless and Death In Vegas are in a happy place at the moment?

R. F.: Very much. I feel creatively this is probably the most exciting time for the band. You know I talk about the band but the band is me. But I've always not thought of it as me. When I make a D.I.V. record I have to think differently. I can't explain it. It's actually a very natural thing to go into state but the reason that it took so long to make this record is I know what it takes out of me when I'm ready to do it.

You know, doesn't come easy, it comes with a prize but i feel this album I'm really really proud of and creatively I've positioned the band and the kind of festivals we're doing for next year it feels very good and as for Fearless is two years after starting drone and curating tresor and all the exciting things for next year its all fantastic. It's weird all of a sudden starting to DJ-ing as I used to when i was in my twenties. Now I've got two small children and playing till six o clock in the morning in the morning has it's payback with the children but it's good you know and ..

K.G: It re-energizes you yeah?

R. F.: Totally, totally. The only thing is hard sometimes when you're doing it without having a big team or people around you it kind of feels like you're on your own but that's the struggle, the fight I guess.

 

K.G: But at the end of the day you're free to go down a creative path of your own choosing, so i think that always pays back in the end no?

R. F.: Exactly.

 

K.G: One last thing, because you keep referring to the album should we expect any releases in the following months?

R. F.: There's a new single which just because of the pressing plans is late. Is really crazy at the moment like I'm sure you know to get vinyl pressed we're talking 4 months so as soon as that's ready there's a new release. There's also a release - I can't say what it is - but two D.I.V. tracks that never made it on to a vinyl, and there's a lot of D.I.V. releases and then there's a ton of Fearless releases and then there's all the other releases on drone which are lined up .
