Οι Black Angels στο ClockSound.gr
Πριν από λίγες μέρες είδαμε τους Black Angels στο Piraeus 117 Academy, ήταν μια καλή εμφάνιση αλλά ακόμη καλύτερη ήταν και η συνομιλία που είχαμε μαζί τους μερικές ώρες πριν το live, στις εγκαταστάσεις του Piraeus 117 Academy.
Οι Black Angels είχαν τάξει αυτή την συνέντευξη στο ClockSound από την περίοδο του φετινού Primavera Sound στη Βαρκελώνη (διαβάστε εδώ για την εμφάνισή τους). Τότε δεν είχαμε καταφέρει να τους συναντήσουμε λόγω του προγράμματός τους, έτσι μεταφέραμε το ραντεβού μας για την Αθήνα. Κράτησαν λοιπόν την υπόσχεσή τους και ο Alex Maas μαζί με τον Christian Bland μας χάρισαν μερικά λεπτά από το χρόνο τους για μια χαλαρή και άνετη κουβέντα στο Piraeus 117 Academy.
Lina P: Καλώς ήρθατε και πάλι στην Ελλάδα και εκ μέρους του ClockSound σας ευχαριστώ που δεχτήκατε την πρόσκλησή μας για αυτή τη συνέντευξη. Τι είναι, λοιπόν, αυτό που σας κάνει να έρχεστε ξανά και ξανά στην Ελλάδα;
Alex Maas: Όσες φορές έχουμε έρθει στην Ελλάδα, περάσαμε καταπληκτικά.
Christian Bland: Εδώ έχουμε κάνει μερικά από τα καλύτερά μας live στην Ευρώπη.
Lina: Προτιμάτε τα ανοιχτά φεστιβάλ, όπως για παράδειγμα, το Rockwave Festival και το Release Festival, μιλώντας για την Ελλάδα, ή προτιμάτε τα live σε κλειστούς χώρους;
Alex: Κάθε περίπτωση είναι ξεχωριστή. Στα live σε κλειστούς χώρους, μπορούμε να κάνουμε το soundcheck.
Christian: Σε κλειστούς χώρους, η κατάσταση είναι πιο ελεγχόμενη.
Alex: Ναι, είναι πιο ελεγχόμενη.
Alex: Ωστόσο, όταν παίζουμε μπροστά σε 30 χιλιάδες κόσμο, όπως στην περίπτωση με τους Black Keys, είναι εξίσου καλή φάση. Αλλά, ναι, το ελεγχόμενο περιβάλλον είναι καλύτερο.
Lina: Πείτε μας για το νέο σας album. Γνωρίζουμε ήδη ότι γίνεται αναφορά στους Velvet Undergound. Γιατί όμως το ονομάσατε "Death Song", ενώ το τελευταίο τραγούδι ονομάζεται Life Song. Είναι ένα album για τη ζωή ή το θάνατο;
Alex: Είναι και για τα δύο.
Christian: Καλύπτει όλο το φάσμα.
Lina: Ποιες είναι οι επιρροές σας;
Alex: Οι επιρροές μας; Από πού να ξεκινήσουμε; Έχουμε πολλές επιρροές. Τα πάντα, από Buddy Holly μέχρι 13th Flour Elevator, Velvet Underground, Clinic, Radiohead.
Christian: Οι Beatles, Brian Jones.
Lina: Ποια είναι τα top σύγχρονα album ή μπάντες για εσάς;
Christian: Οι Clinic, τους λατρεύουμε τους Clinic.
Alex: Μ’ αρέσει πολύ το album "Free Reign ΙΙ". Έχω κολλήσει με αυτό το album.
Christian: Ναι, πράγματι. To "Free Reign II". Εμένα μου αρέσουν και οι Apache Dropout από το Bloomington, Ιντιάνα. Μ’ αρέσουν πολύ.
Alex: Οι Soft Moon είναι μια άλλη καλή μπάντα.
Christian: Οι Crystal Stilts, οι Place to Bury Strangers και πολλοί άλλοι.
Lina: Τι παίζει με το Levitation Festival; Γίνεται στο Austin, σωστά;
Christian: Ναι, θα γίνει ξανά τον επόμενο χρόνο.
Lina: Αυτό το φεστιβάλ δηλώνει ότι το Austin είναι η γενέτειρα της psych rock σκηνής; Μήπως βιώνουμε μια νέα εποχή της psych rock σκηνής;
Alex: Μόλις απάντησες στην ερώτηση.
Christian: Ναι, σίγουρα η psych rock ξεκίνησε από το Austin, με τους 13th Floor Elevator. Και γι’ αυτό και το Levitation γίνεται εκεί.
Lina: Κατάγεστε και οι δύο από το Austin;
Christian: Όχι, δεν καταγόμαστε από το Austin, όμως ζούμε εκεί τα τελευταία 15 χρόνια.
Alex: Ζω εκεί εδώ και 18 χρόνια.
Christian: Ναι, πράγματι, εγώ 15 και ο Alex 18 χρόνια. Είναι πλέον το σπίτι μας.
Lina: Γνωρίζεστε από μικροί;
Christian: Ναι, μεγαλώσαμε σε μια μικρή πόλη, το Searbrook στο Τέξας, νοτιοανατολικά του Χιούστον και γνωριζόμαστε από μικροί, από όταν εγώ ήμουν 13 και ο Alex 11.
Lina: Καταφέρνετε να συνδυάζετε διακοπές με τις περιοδείες σας;
Alex: Προσπαθούμε, αλλά αυτή η περιοδεία είναι αρκετά ζόρικη.
Christian: Αυτή τη φορά, δεν έχουμε πολύ χρόνο στην Ελλάδα. Κάναμε απλώς μερικές βόλτες γύρω από το ξενοδοχείο.
Alex: Είναι πολύ σφιχτό το πρόγραμμα. Δεν έχουν κοιμηθεί σχεδόν καθόλου.
Christian: Μία μέρα πριν παίξαμε στη Θεσσαλονίκη. Ξυπνήσαμε 6 το πρωί σήμερα για να έρθουμε εδώ στην Αθήνα και αύριο πετάμε για Φινλανδία.
Alex: Εγώ, προσωπικά, θέλω να κοιμηθώ.
Christian: Όχι σήμερα, γιατί αύριο πρέπει να σηκωθούμε στις 7 και σήμερα το βράδυ θα ξενυχτήσουμε.
Alex: Αύριο όμως;
Κάπου εδώ, προσπαθούν να δουν τι παίζει με το πρόγραμμα και συνειδητοποιούν ότι δεν έχουν και πολλά περιθώρια για ξεκούραση και ξενερώνουν, τους επαναφέρω στην τάξη για να κλείσουμε την κουβέντα με κάτι πιο ουσιώδες...
Lina: Μιλάτε για πολιτική στα τραγούδια σας;
Alex: Ναι, νομίζω ότι όταν κάποιος έχει μια πλατφόρμα, ένα βήμα, πρέπει να το χρησιμοποιεί. Είναι ένας καλός τρόπος για να μοιραζόμαστε τις ιδεολογίες μας, να εκφράζουμε τι πιστεύουμε για τον κόσμο, να προσπαθούμε να τον κατανοήσουμε, να δούμε τι παίζει. Να δούμε γιατί όλα είναι τόσο χάλια.
Christian: Μιλάμε για τη ζωή, παρατηρούμε τις καταστάσεις γύρω μας και φυσικά η πολιτική είναι μέρος της ζωής μας, επομένως κάπως έτσι λειτουργούν τα κομμάτια μας. Προσπαθούμε να εκφράσουμε τις απόψεις μας και να διευρύνουμε τη σκέψη και του υπόλοιπου κόσμου.
Κάπου εδώ αποφασίζω να τους αφήσω να ξεκουραστούν, αφού έχει προηγηθεί το soundcheck τους και απομένουν ελάχιστες ώρες μέχρι την βραδινή τους εμφάνιση. Είναι τόσο χαλαροί όμως και οι δύο που η κουβέντα μας θα μπορούσε άνετα να τραβήξει, σκέφτηκα όμως να μην καταχραστώ την καλή τους διάθεση και να τους αφήσω να χαλαρώσουν για λίγο. Βγάζουμε φωτογραφίες και τους αποχαιρετώ. Ωραίοι τύποι οι Τεξανοί!

Lina P: Well come back again and thank you very much for accepting our invitation. So, what makes you come back in Greek, again and again?
Alex Maas: Well, the last couple of times we have been here was really great, so that’s why.
Christian Bland: Some of the best shows in Europe.
Lina: Do you prefer performing in open air festivals, like Rockwave and Release (here in Greece) or do you prefer indoor gigs?
Alex: It’s kind of different beasts. In indoor shows, we have the chance to sound check.
Christian: Indoor shows are more controlled.
Alex: Yeah! It is more controlled.
Christian: I, personally, prefer indoor gigs.
Alex: But, you know, if we are playing, for example, with Black Keys, in front of 30.000 people, that’s a good thing too. But this controlled environment it is nice.
Lina: About your new album, it is self-clear that there is a reference in Velvet Underground, so why it is called "Death Song", whereas the last, closing song is called Life Song. Is this an album for Life or for Death?
Alex: Both
Christian: It runs the whole spectrum.
Lina: And, what about your influences?
Alex: Influences? Where can we start? We have a lot of influences. Everything, from Buddy Holly to 13th Flour Elevators, Velvet Underground, Clinic, Radiohead.
Christian: The Beatles, Brian Jones.
Lina: What are your top modern albums or bands?
Christian: Clinic, we love Clinic.
Alex: I really like the "Free Reign II" record. I can’t get past that. Christian: Yeah! Free Reign II. I also like Apache Dropout from Bloomington, Indiana. I really like them.
Alex: The Soft Moon is really cool band too.
Christian: Crystal Stilts. A Place to Bury Strangers and many more.
Lina: What about Levitation Festival, it is in Austin, right?
Christian: Yes, it is coming back next year.
Lina: Does this festival indicate that Austin is the birthplace for psych rock bands or that we are experiencing a new era of psych rock?
Alex: You have answered the question with that.
Christian: It is the birthplace, starting with 13th Floor Elevator. That’s why Levitation started from Austin.
Lina: Are you from Austin? Both of you?
Christian: We are not originally from there, but we have been there for 15 years.
Alex: I am there for 18 years.
Christian: I am there for 15 years. He is longer.
Christian: It’s our home now.
Lina: You know each other from your childhood?
Christian: We grew up in a little city called Searbrook in Texas. In the southeast of Houston, so we knew each other growing up, since I was thirteen and he was eleven.
Lina: Do you manage to combine tours with relaxation?
Alex: We try to, but this tour is really intense.
Christian: This time, in Greece, we haven’t had the time. We just wandered in the streets around the hotel.
Alex: We have been on a tight schedule. We haven’t had much sleep.
Christian: One day before we played in Thessaloniki. We woke up at 6:30 and we came here to play and then tomorrow we have to fly to Finland.
Alex: I am looking for some sleep though.
Christian: May be not tonight as we have to wake up at seven and we have to stay up all night.
Alex: But tomorrow?
Lina: What about politics? Do you speak of politics with your music?
Alex: Yes, I think if you have a platform to speak you have to say something. It’s a good way to share your ideologies, express what you think about the world, try to understand it, try to figure out the world. Kind of how fucked up it is.
Christian: We speak about life, we observe things and politics is part of life and therefore it works its ways. We try to express our opinions and try to open other’s people minds.
At that point I decide to let them rest after their soundcheck has preceded and there were few hours left until their evening appearance. They are so relaxed that we all could easily pull our conversation, but I thought not to break their good mood and let them relax for a while. Take photos and say goodbye. Nice people, Texans!
