NOS Primavera Sound Porto 2018: The War On Drugs, Grizzly Bear, Fever Ray, Lorde
Το φετινό φεστιβάλ, NOS Primavera Sound στο Porto, αντιπροσωπεύεται από την εξής δήλωση:
"Θα χρειαζόταν κάτι παραπάνω από ασταμάτητη βροχή, για να εμποδίσει το ενθουσιασμένο πλήθος, από το να παρακολουθήσει το φεστιβάλ του 2018’"
Η έβδομη χρονιά του NOS Primavera Sound, μας παρουσίασε ένα εξαιρετικά ποικιλόμορφο και ενδιαφέρον lineup, και παρόλο που ο καιρός ήταν βροχερός κρύος και καθόλου υποστηρικτικός, οι 100.000 θεατές, δεν πτοήθηκαν ούτε λεπτό, στη διάρκεια και των τριών ημερών του φεστιβάλ. Η mini εκδοχή του NOS Primavera Sound στο Porto, και σε επίπεδο σκηνής αλλα και πλήθους που την παρακολουθεί, παραμένει πιστή, σε αυτό που είχε προαναφερθεί και στην προεπισκόπηση του φεστιβάλ, ότι είναι ένα από τα πιο λιτά και άνετα φεστιβάλ στην Ευρώπη. Το γεγονός αυτό, βοηθά στο να εξηγηθεί πως, στη διάρκεια των τριών ημερών, ακούστηκε μια μεγάλη ποικιλία γλωσσικής προφοράς.
Πέρα από τη μίξη των ντόπιων, μπορούσες να ακούσεις ανθρώπους να μιλάνε σε διάφορες γλώσσες, από κάθε γωνιά της Ευρώπης και ακόμα παραπέρα. Το highlight της φετινής χρονιάς ήταν η παρουσίαση ενός line-up, που ξεπέρασε κάθε προσδοκία, ανοίγοντας τον χώρο για ρυθμική ποικιλομορφία, που κυμαίνονταν από κλασικά σχήματα της alternativerock, μέχρι μεγάλα ονόματα της hip-hop σκηνής. Έντονη ήταν η παρουσία, προσεκτικά επιλεγμένων γυναικείων καλλιτεχνών και συγκροτημάτων.
Η πρώτη μέρα του φεστιβάλ, ξεκίνησε με την προσθήκη δυο νέων μουσικών σκηνών, SEAT και Primavera Bits. Αν και η πρόγνωση του καιρού δεν υποσχόταν ηλιόλουστες και ζεστές μουσικές μέρες, μόνο την τρίτη μέρα του φεστιβάλ, η βροχή προσπάθησε να κλέψει την παράσταση! Η προσθήκη των νέων μουσικών σκηνών σε συνδυασμό με την αλλαγή της Pitchfork σκηνής, έγινε αισθητή την δεύτερη μέρα του φεστιβάλ. Λόγω του πυκνού προγράμματος, ήταν προφανές πως έπρεπε να γίνουν άμεσες επιλογές, για να καταφέρει κανείς να παρακολουθήσει όλες τις συναυλίες, η έστω να πάρει μια μικρή γεύση!
Day 1
Father John Misty
Ο καιρός διχαζόταν ανάμεσα στον ήλιο και την ομίχλη, και κάτω από αυτές τις συνθήκες, ο Father John Misty, άνοιξε τη βραδιά της Πέμπτης. Ξεκινώντας με το ‘’Nancy from now on’’, και συνεχίζοντας με κάποια τραγούδια από τα προηγούμενα άλμπουμ του, το πλήθος δεν άργησε να ακολουθήσει, τραγουδώντας τους στίχους μαζί του, από το πρώτο κιόλας τραγούδι. Συνέχισε, παρουσιάζοντας κάποια κομμάτια από το πιο πρόσφατο άλμπουμ του, ‘’God’s Favorite Customer’’, το οποίο είχε κυκλοφορήσει λίγες μόνο μέρες πριν το φεστιβάλ.

Lorde
Οι μεγάλες προσδοκίες του ενθουσιώδους κοινού, σχετικά με την απόδοση της Lorde στη σκηνή του PrimaveraSound, εκπληρώθηκαν! Παρά το γεγονός ότι ήταν αρκετά απορροφημένη στη δική της trance, και η αλληλεπίδραση με την μπάντα και τους χορευτές ήταν πολύ μικρή, η παρουσία της, γινόταν όλο και πιο έντονη μετά από κάθε κομμάτι.
Αν και νέα στην ηλικία η Lorde είναι αναμφισβήτητα μια ανερχόμενη entertainer. Ξεκίνησε τη βραδιά με το “Sober” και το “Homemade Dynamite’s”, κομμάτια από το τελευταίο της άλμπουμ με τίτλο,“Melodrama”, συνεχίζοντας με hits από την πρώτη της δουλειά , όπως το “Tennis Court”, και το "Magnets" των Disclosure.

Το show της δεν σταματάει όμως εκεί. Η τραγουδίστρια, μέσα από ένα έντονο performance, γεμάτο αυτοπεποίθηση, ξεδίπλωσε τον εύθραυστο εαυτό της και τα συναισθήματά της, μέσα από τις ιστορίες των τραγουδιών της. Όταν ερμήνευσε το ήρεμο και έντονα βαθύ ‘’Liability’’, η Lorde, εκμυστηρεύτηκε στο κοινό της, αδύναμες στιγμές και τους ευχαρίστησε που την έκαναν να νιώθει λιγότερο μοναχική εκείνο το βράδυ. Τραγούδησε έπειτα το κομμάτι, συνοδευόμενο από πλήθος κινούμενων οθονών και φακών. Η καλλιτέχνης, ήταν φανερά δακρυσμένη και συγκλονισμένη, απο τον τρόπο με τον οποίο την "αγκάλιασε" το κοινό της, προσπαθώντας να εκφράσει την ευγνωμοσύνη της προς αυτούς!
Οδεύοντας προς το τέλος της συναυλίας της, με όλο το πλήθος να τραγουδάει μαζί της, όπως φυσικά αναμενόταν, το “Royals” και το “Team” έκαναν την εμφάνιση τους! Το κλείσιμο έγινε με το “Green Light” , που μερικοί το περίμεναν με αντίστοιχη προσμονή, απογειώνοντας έτσι το κλείσιμο της παρουσίας της, που μετατρέπεται σε μια αληθινά αέρινη και πολύ δυνατή γυναικεία παρουσία!

Tyler, the Creator
Κλείνοντας για την πρώτη μέρα στη σκηνή της SEAT, ο Tyler, the Creator είχε το δύσκολο έργο να καλύψει το κενό, μετά από το εντυπωσιακό show της Lorde. Παρόλο που θα μπορούσε να είναι μια έκπληξη για κάποιους, αυτό που είδαμε την πρώτη μέρα του φεστιβάλ, ήταν ένα μεγάλο πλήθος γεμάτο επιθυμία και διάθεση να παρατηρήσει πιο προσεκτικά την performance του Καλιφορνέζου hip-hop καλλιτέχνη.
Όταν ξεκίνησε η συναυλία, πολύ άμεσα το κοινό άρχισε να ακολουθεί ενθουσιωδώς τα ρυθμικά beats της μουσικής του Creator. Ο Tyler αφού συνειδητοποίησε ότι το κοινό του είναι παθιασμένο να χορεύει και να τραγουδά ρυθμικά μαζί του, μπορούσε πια να νιώσει σαν στο σπίτι του!
Δίνοντας το καλύτερο show που μπορούσε μέχρι το τέλος της βραδιάς, γεμάτο κίνηση ρυθμό και πολλή ένταση, μπορούσε κανείς να αισθανθεί ότι είχε γεμίσει εντελώς τον χώρο που προοριζόταν γι’αυτόν. Το βράδυ συνεχίστηκε με τον Jamie xx, να παίζει στη κεντρική σκηνή με το djset του και το ντεμπούτο της νέας ηλεκτρονικής σκηνής, Primavera Bits.

Day 2
Η δεύτερη μέρα του NOS Primavera Sound, ξεκίνησε με έναν απροσδόκητο επισκέπτη. Μία ντροπαλή ακτίνα ήλιου που πρόβαλλε ανάμεσα στα σύννεφα! Αυτή η στιγμή τελικά μετατράπηκε σε μια από τις αγαπημένες μου στιγμές εκείνη τη μέρα, καθώς ο ήλιος συνόδεψε το τελευταίο set τραγουδιών των Grizzly Bear.
Όπως αναμενόταν, η δεύτερη μέρα έφτασε γεμάτη περισσότερα θεάματα, και για άλλη μια φορά έπρεπε να γίνουν επιλογές. Προκειμένου να ζήσω την απόλυτη εμπειρία κάποιων θεαμάτων, κατάφερα μόνο να ρίξω μια γρήγορη ματιά σε κάποια άλλα. Αλλά πριν κατευθυνθώ στα αγαπημένα για μένα δρώμενα, κατάφερα να ακούσω τους πρώτους του Pitchfork Stage, τους Άγγλους Yellow Days και ενώ βράδιαζε, με λίγη βιασύνη πρόλαβα να δώ τα πρώτα λεπτά των δυναμικών Λατίνων Ibeyi, ενώ κατευθυνόμουν στη SEAT σκηνή για να δω τους GrizzlyBear.
Με την δεύτερη μέρα, έχοντας δει τον Tyler, the Creator την προηγουμένη, την hip-hop σκηνή του φεστιβάλ αναλαμβάνουν πολύ μεγάλα ονόματα, όπως Vince Staples και A$AP Rocky, κάνοντας διαδοχικά το show τους στην βασική σκηνή του NosPrimavera.
The Breeders
Η δεύτερη συναυλία της ημέρας, στη NOS Primavera σκηνή, ήταν μια από τις πιο δυναμικές γυναίκες της Αμερικής με τους Breeders. Οι αδερφές Kim και Kelley Deal, μαζί με τους Josephine Wiggs and Jim Macpherson στα ντραμς, ήρθαν στο Primavera για να μας αποδείξουν ότι η φόρμουλα κιθάρας-ντραμς-μπάσου, είναι ακόμα ενεργή και αποτελεσματική.
Τα ισχυρά 90's riffs αποτελούν ακόμα επιρροή της σημερινής indie rock και η μπάντα είναι σε περιοδεία με το νέο τους άλμπουμ, "AllNerve" (2017), μετά από 10 χρόνια παύσης.
Στη συναυλία, οι Breeders παίξανε παλιά και καινούρια τραγούδια, όπως και τραγούδια των Pixies (‘’Gigantic’’) και κατά τη διάρκεια των κλασικών hit όπως “Cannonball”, “Off You” και “Drivin’ on 9”, ο έντονος ενθουσιασμός του πλήθους ήταν ορατός! Αποτέλεσαν μια αξέχαστη εμφάνιση, που ταίριαζε στην κεντρική σκηνή του φετινού Primavera.

Grizzly Bear
Ξεκινώντας τη συναυλία τους με απόλυτη συνέπεια, στη σκηνή της SEAT, οι Grizzly Bear που έχουν έδρα τους το Brooklyn, ήταν από τις συναυλίες που ανυπομονούσα να παρακολουθήσω, και παρά το γεγονός ότι είμαι μεγάλη fan, μόνο τώρα κατάφερα να τους δω ζωντανά. Το 5ο άλμπουμ τους ("Painted Ruins"), το οποίο κυκλοφόρησε το καλοκαίρι του 2017, ήταν το αγαπημένο μου για εκείνη τη χρονιά. Σαν συνέχεια του "Shields" (2012), είχε επίσης πολύ επιτυχημένες κριτικές, ωστόσο δεν φάνηκε να συγκέντρωσε αρκετή προσοχή, μιας και δεν εμφανίστηκε πολύς κόσμος από την αρχή της συναυλίας.
Έτσι με ένα λίγο κρύο ξεκίνημα, μόνο με τους βασικούς fan να ενισχύουν την κατάσταση, πήρε μόνο λίγα κομμάτια ακόμη για να τραβήξουν την προσοχή του υπόλοιπου αναποφάσιστου πλήθους που περιτριγύριζαν τη σκηνή. Το ‘’Losing all sense’’, ήταν το κομμάτι που άνοιξε τη βραδιά τους.

Μετά από αυτό, τα πάντα φάνηκαν να γίνονται τέλεια εκείνο το βράδυ, με ένα πανέμορφο ηλιοβασίλεμα που ζωγράφιζε τον ουρανό, καθώς ο τραγουδιστής και κιθαρίστας Edward Droste μίλησε με λίγα λόγια στο κοινό του, λέγοντας ότι ‘’Υπήρξαμε διστακτικοί στο να παίξουμε σε ένα βροχερό φεστιβάλ, αλλά τελικά ήταν μια όμορφη αρχή για την νύχτα’’. Τη στιγμή που παίξανε το ‘’Two Weeks’’, ¨ηταν ήδη αδύνατο να κινηθεί κανείς εύκολα ανάμεσα στο πλήθος, το οποίο είχε απορροφηθεί από τον ήχο της grizzly αλλα και γοητευτικής bear!

Superorganism
Η παγκοσμίου βεληνεκούς κολεκτίβα, θεωρείται μία από τις μεγάλες εκπλήξεις του φεστιβάλ, αν και το άλμπουμ τους είναι ήδη αναγνωρισμένο από το κοινό, αυτό το live show αναμενόταν με λίγη ανησυχία για το πώς θα μπορούσε να φανεί στη σκηνή. Αλλά από την ώρα που ξεκίνησε η συναυλία την ανησυχία αντικατέστησε ένας μεγάλος ενθουσιασμός, που απογειώθηκε από την ενέργεια που μετέδωσε η μουσική τους. Δεν χρειάστηκε πολλή ώρα για να δει κανείς όλο το πλήθος, ακόμη και εκείνους που δεν γνώριζαν την πάντα, να χαμογελάνε, να χορεύουν και να προσπαθούν να τραγουδήσουν μαζί τους.
Η pop μουσική τους, γεμάτη με electronic experimental πλευρές, σε συνδυασμό με την ντροπαλή και χαρισματική παρουσία της βασικής τραγουδίστριας, Orono Noguichi, και των τριών πραγματικά έντονων παρουσιών, των backup φωνητικών, όπως και των τριών μουσικών, ολοκλήρωσαν το team της βραδιάς. Με μόνο ένα άλμπουμ, το μόνο πρόβλημα που υπήρχε στο τέλος της συναυλίας, ήταν ότι το live τους είχε τελειώσει πολύ γρήγορα.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra
Εκρηκτικοί! Αυτή θα μπορούσε να είναι η πιο κατάλληλη λέξη για να χαρακτηρίσει κάποιος την συναυλία των Unknown Mortal Orchestra, με επικεφαλής τον Ruban Nielsen. Κάποιοι θα μπορούσαν να πουν πως το σκηνικό της Pitchfork σκηνής ήταν πολύ μικρό για μια μπάντα τόσο δημοφιλή στο κοινό, αλλά το νέο μοτίβο της σκηνής, όπως και το καταπράσινο περιβάλλον, ήταν το ιδανικό μέρος για τον Ruban να τραγουδήσει τα κομμάτια του μέσα στη νύχτα!
Με ένα τεράστιο ρεπερτόριο, είχαν ένα ολόκληρο πλήθος να τραγουδάει συνεχώς μαζί τους, χειροκροτώντας τις καλύτερες επιτυχίες τους όπως το ‘’So Good Being In Trouble’’, to ‘’Huneybee ‘’ και βεβαίως να μη ξεχνάμε το ‘’Multi -Love’’, από το ίδιο άλμπουμ.

Παρόλο που δεν ήταν πολύ επικοινωνιακός με τον κόσμο, ο Ruban Nielsen κατέκτησε το κοινό του με τον δικό του μοναδικό τρόπο, παίζοντας μουσική και δείχνοντας τις φοβερές δεξιότητες του, που κυριαρχούσαν μέσα στα δυνατά και θορυβώδη solo του! Έμοιαζε να απολαμβάνει πολύ τη στιγμή, πίνοντας ποτά και μπαίνοντας ανάμεσα στον κόσμο παίζοντας την κιθάρα του και αφήνοντας μια ισχυρή δόνηση μετά από κάθε τραγούδι.

Fever Ray
Τα μεσάνυχτα, κλείνοντας τη μέρα για τη σκηνή της SEAT, είδαμε την Karin Dreijer, η οποία άφησε για λίγο καιρό τους The Knife και επέστρεψε πέρυσι στο προσωπικό της project, τις Fever Ray, κατέλαβε το φεστιβάλ με την βοήθεια ενός πραγματικά γυναικείου στρατού! Αυτό που είδαμε στη σκηνή, ήταν μια παρουσίαση γεμάτη με μία τέχνη που μεταφέρει μία τεράστια πολιτική και κοινωνική σάτιρα.
Η επιλογή της εκρηκτικής μορφή τους, με το μυώδες σώμα, ένα παλτό που μιμούνταν το δέρμα μια αρκούδας και η ντυμένη σας χαρακτήρας ταινίας τρόμου, και γενικά η εξαιρετικά θεατρική και creepy εμφάνισή τους ήταν ένα ταξίδι, που κανένας δεν μετάνιωσε να είναι κομμάτι του. Η νύχτα συνεχίστηκε με πολύ χορό, με τα set πολλών djs όπως η Helna Hauff, Levon Vincent και Marcel Dettmann στη νέα ηλεκτρονική σκηνή του Primavera Bits, και με συναυλίες όπως του Sam Shepherd, γνωστός και ως Floating Points, στην Pitchfork σκηνή.

Day 3
Η έβδομη χρονιά του NOS Primavera Sound ολοκληρώθηκε στις 9 Ιουνίου με την τελευταία μέρα να είναι sold-out. Και μετά από μέρες που αντιμετωπίζαμε την αβεβαιότητα των καιρικών συνθηκών, την τελευταία μέρα η βροχή δεν ήταν και τόσο ευπρόσδεκτος επισκέπτης, αλλά όχι αρκετά δυνατή για να κρατήσει το κοινό μακριά από την διασκέδασή του. Λόγω της βροχής, η οποία επέμεινε για την διάρκεια όλης της βραδιάς, αδιάβροχα και ομπρέλες κάλυψαν όλο το πάρκο. Είτε ο κόσμος το έφερνε από το σπίτι του, είτε μοιράζονταν από την οργάνωση του φεστιβάλ, που έκανε το παν για να διευκολύνει τον κόσμο και να μετριάσει τις επιπτώσεις των καιρικών συνθηκών.
Το εντυπωσιακό line-up της τελευταίας μέρας, εξηγεί γιατί την μεγάλη προσμονή και συμμετοχή του κοινού. Προς το παρόν, μέχρι το επόμενο Line-up, ελπίζουμε η βροχή να μην είναι μέρος του φεστιβάλ για το 2019. Με όλα τα βλέμματα στραμμένα στις προσδοκίες για την παρουσία του Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, δεν ήταν τόσο εύκολο να εστιάσει κάποιος σε άλλα performances της τρίτης και τελευταίας μέρας του NOS Primavera Sound.
Ο συγγραφέας του ‘’Stragger Lee’’ και η μπάντα του, μας προσέφεραν ένα εκπληκτικό θέαμα, κάτω από την βροχή και αφήνοντάς μας την αίσθηση ότι είμαστε μέρος μιας αξέχαστης βραδιάς. Μεταξύ των συναυλιών, ένας μεγάλος αριθμός ανθρώπων αποφάσισαν να αποφύγουν τον βροχερό καιρό, βρίσκοντας καταφύγιο σε μία τέντα κοντά στη σκηνή του Primavera Bits, ή κοντά στο food-spot.
Μία μέρα, με πολύ πλούσιο Line-up, που φάνηκε να είναι ένας αγώνας, ήταν πολύ δύσκολο να παρακολουθήσει κανείς όλες τις συναυλίες. Κάποια από τα πιο μεγάλα ονόματα ήταν ο Luis Severo, η Kelela, οι Metá Metá, Nick Cave, The War on Drugs και Abra.
KELELA
Λόγω της εμφάνισης του Nick Cave, δημιουργήθηκε η εντύπωση πως δεν υπήρχαν πολλές ενδιαφέρουσες συναυλίες, αλλά αυτό δεν ίσχυε καθόλου. Κάτι πολύ ενδιαφέρον ήταν η Kelela. Εμφανίστηκε στην Super Bock σκηνή στις 6:50μ.μ. Ξεκινώντας από τις ΗΠΑ, η τραγουδίστρια από την Αιθιοπία, η οποία κυκλοφόρησε το πρώτο της άλμπουμ (‘’Takemeapart’’) στα τέλη του 2017. Κατά τη διάρκεια της performance της, φάνηκε συγκλονισμένη από το μεγάλο ενδιαφέρον του κοινού. ’’Σημαίνει πάρα πολλά για μένα, ότι με ακούτε ακόμα και με βροχή’’, είπε και αφού συγκράτησε τα δάκρυά της, δεν σταματούσε να ευχαριστεί και να ευγνωμονεί το κοινό της! Δεν χρειάστηκε μεγάλη προσπάθεια, για να πειστεί το κοινό. Ο κόσμος ήταν εκεί για να χορέψει μαζί της , παρά τη βροχή!. ‘’LMK’’, ήταν το κομμάτι που επέλεξε για να ανοίξει τη συναυλία της.

Η παρουσία της αποτελούνταν από εκείνη και τον Dj της, και παρόλο που φαινόταν άδεια η σκηνή, σύντομα η Kelela ανέλαβε δράση, τραγουδώντας και χορεύοντας έντονα. Έχοντας μια πολύ ενδιαφέρουσα φωνή που επιδίδεται σε μοντέρνα soul και R&B ακούσματα, η Kelela τραγουδούσε και χόρευε με την αισθησιακή της μουσική , εκθέτοντας τους πάντες σε ένα ηλεκτρονικό groove, κάνοντας τους να χορεύουν ακατάπαυστα. Κομμάτια όπως τα "Rewind’’, ‘’BlueLight’’, ‘’AMessage’’ άφησαν μια πολύ καλή εντύπωση στον κόσμο που την παρακολούθησε!

Metá Metá
Στην κύρια σκηνή, NOS Primavera, στις 19:50 παρακολουθήσαμε τους Metá Metá, με το εκλεκτό μίγμα των μουσικών ειδών τους αποτελώντας μια καλή προσθήκη στο line-up του φεστιβάλ, που μέχρι τώρα ήταν παραγκωνισμένη από την Αμερικανική μουσική.
Tο Βραζιλιάνικο σχήμα φάνηκε να ακολουθεί από τη μία μια κλασσική ροή, παράλληλα όμως δημιουργούσε εκρηκτικά απροσδόκητα μουσικά τοπία, που κινούνταν από funk-rock ακούσματα μέχρι πειραματική μουσική. Με το φως της ημέρας να συνεχίζεται, η μουσική τους ήταν κατάλληλη για να κάνει τους πάντες να χορέψουν ενώ παράλληλα ο κρύος και βροχερός καιρός συνέχιζε να επιμένει!

Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds
Το κοινό του Nick Cave ήταν το μεγαλύτερο και πιο υπνωτισμένο πλήθος που είδαμε σε όλο το φεστιβάλ. Οι άνθρωποι περίμεναν εκεί υπομονετικά κάτω απο την βροχή για τον μπάντα. Η επιστροφή του στη σκηνή του NOS Primavera Sound Festival, στο Πόρτο, ήταν μια αξέχαστη νύχτα για όλους. Αλλά η αλήθεια είναι πως όταν μιλάς για ένα όνομα όπως ο Nick Cave, είναι εύκολο να ακουστεί ως κάτι μεγάλο, και σίγουρα αξιόλογο, καθώς θα μπορούσε να χαρακτηριστεί ως ένα από τα ισχυρότερα και καλύτερα ονόματα της πραγματικής rockn’ roll σκηνής. Αυτό που μας προσφέρει είναι κάτι παραπάνω από rock 'n' roll , όντας καλός αφηγητής και με όλα αυτά τα χρόνια σκληρής δουλειάς του, έχει δώσει στο κοινό του πολλά όμορφα κομμάτια και στιγμές. Στην τελευταία του δουλειά, με μουσική που ενσαρκώνει τους πόνους και την ποίηση της ζωής του, είναι γεμάτη με προσωπικές ιστορίες του, που εκτέθηκαν στην main σκηνή του φεστιβάλ, προσδίδοντας ένα βαρύ και μελαγχολικό στοιχείο στην συναυλία.
Στη βιασύνη μου για να προλάβω την συναυλία των The War On Drugs , δεν κατάφερα να δω την παρουσία του Nick Cave μέχρι τέλους, αλλά αν το δεύτερο μέρος της συναυλίας ήταν αντίστοιχο με το πρώτο τότε είναι κατανοητές όλες οι υψηλές προσδοκίες που περιβάλλαν αυτή την παρουσίαση.

The War On Drugs
To highlight της βραδιάς, και ο λόγος που αποφάσισα να αποχωρήσω νωρίτερα από τη συναυλία του Nick Cave, αποτέλεσε η συναυλία των The War on Drugs. Παρά τις καιρικές συνθήκες και κάποια τεχνικά προβλήματα στην αρχή της συναυλίας, χρειάστηκαν μόνο λίγα κομμάτια για να θερμάνουν το κοινό, και να το δελεάσουν σε ένα live γεμάτο με όμορφα κομμάτια από ένα από τα καλύτερα άλμπουμ το 2017.
Το συγκρότημα περιοδεύει μεταξύ των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών και της Ευρώπης, αφήνοντας πίσω τους μερικές συναυλίες όπου μπορούμε να παρατηρήσουμε διαφορές σε σχέση με τον τρόπο που παίξανε στο Πόρτο.

Σε αντίθεση με όσα συνέβησαν στις πρόσφατες συναυλίες του γκρουπ, στις οποίες πραγματοποιήθηκαν πολλές αλλαγές στο πρόγραμμα, ακόμα και στον τρόπο που παίζουν τα κομμάτια, υπήρχε χώρος για κομμάτια από το προηγούμενο άλμπουμ τους(’’ Lost in a Dream ‘’), όπως το ‘’An Ocean in Between the Waves’’, αλλά και από το καινούριο, όπως το ‘’Strangest Thing’’. Το “A Deeper Understanding” (2017), ενίσχυσε την επίδραση των προηγούμενων άλμπουμ και οδήγησε το συγκρότημα από τη Φιλαδέλφεια, στο δρόμο των Grammy Awards. Παρά το συναισθηματικό φορτίο που λάβαμε από την συναυλία των Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, υπήρχαν εκείνοι που δεν σταμάτησαν να χορεύουν στον μελαγχολικό και πάλι, αλλά γρήγορο ρυθμό του AdamGranduciel

Με τη βροχή να συνεχίζει να κερδίζει την παράσταση, και να γίνεται όλο και πιο ισχυρή, η νύχτα συνεχίστηκε στο Primavera Bits με Or:LA και Dennis Sulta, ενώ τα δρώμενα στον εξωτερικό χώρο, συνεχιζόταν με τη συναυλία των post-rock Mogwai, και των χορευτικών Bad Gyal, Arca και Talboman.
To ΝΟS Primavera Sound στο Πόρτο, επιστρέφει το 2019 από την 6η έως την 8η μέρα του Ιουνίου και ελπίζουμε να είμαστε ξανά εκεί!

English Version
This edition of NOS Primavera Sound in Porto, Portugal came with a statement: It will take more than pouring rain to stop the Portuguese crowd.
The seventh edition of NOS Primavera Sound presented us a diverse and excellent line up, and even though the cold and rainy weather was uncooperative, it didn’t stop the 100,000 visitors over the course of three days. Despite it’s the growth, both in stages and attendance, Porto’s own version of Primavera Sound remains true to what was mentioned in the preview, one of the most solid and comfortable festivals to attend in Europe. Which also serves to explain how, in the course of three days, a variety of accents could be heard: well beyond the mix of the locals, one could hear languages from almost every corner of Europe, and perhaps even further.
The highlight of this year’s edition was the presentation of a line-up that went beyond expectations, paving the space for diversity in rhythms that ranged from the classics of alternative rock to the big names of the current hip-hop scenery. Adding to this was the strong presence of female acts amongst the line-up of carefully selected artists.
The first day of the festival kicked off with the addition of two new stages, the SEAT and Primavera Bits. Though the promise lingered in the air, it didn’t rain till the last day of the festival. The addition of the stages and the change of Pitchfork one was heavily sensed on the second day of the festival, when it was first noticeable (this was my 3rd attendance of the festival) that choices would need to be made in order to watch all concerts.
Day 1
Father John Misty
The weather was in a constant fight between misty and sunny, and it was under this light that Father John Misty kicked off the night. Starting off with “Nancy from now on”, followed by some songs from his previous albums which, from the beginning, evoked a singalong from the crowd. He later introduced some songs from his most recent work, “God’s Favourite Customer”, that had been released just days before of the festival.

Lorde
There were a lot of expectations surrounding Lorde’s performance at Primavera Sound, and it’s always nice when expectations are met. Despite being somehow enclosed in her own trance, her performance, alongside the band and with some interactions with the dancers, grew and grew with each song.
Though young in age, Lorde is undeniably an entertainer in the making. She started the night with “Sober” and “Homemade Dynamite’s”, songs from her last work, “Melodrama”, followed by hits from her first work, such as “Tennis Court”, and a “Disclosure” song. The show didn’t stop there and there was, naturally, more to follow.
The singer gave a self-assured performance, revealing her feelings and her fragile self in the final stretch of the concert, through stories behind some of the songs. When introducing the calm and deep “Liability”, Lorde opened up about her dark days and thanked the crowd for making her feel less lonely that night. She then sang the song, accompanied by a moving display of phone flashlights by the crowd.
The artist, visibly and positively shocked by the way she was being received by the audience, couldn’t hold back her thankfulness towards the audience. Near the end of the performance, with the whole crowd singing along, as was expected, the already classic (and long-awaited) "Royals" and "Team" appeared and, in the final stretch, "Green Light" closed the performance for those who had anticipated even higher flights. Lorde has grown up into a woman, imbued with strength and lightness of her performances.

Tyler, the creator
Wrapping up the night at the SEAT Stage, Tyler the creator had the difficult task of filling the possible void left behind after Lorde’s performance. And though it might come as a surprise to some, what we saw on the first day was an audience eager to get a closer look as to what would be the solo act of this Californian hip-hop singer. When the concert started, the audience excitedly followed the beats of the creator (what[u2] we saw was a excited following the beats of the creator). Upon realizing that the crowd was there eagerly accompanying his work and singing his lyrics, Tyler was able to feel at home. Giving all of himself to the audience, towards the end of his show one could feel that he completely filled the space that was destined for him.
The night proceeded with Jamie xx closing the main stage along with his dj set, and the debut of the new electronic stage, Primavera Bits.

Day 2
The second day started with an unexpected guest: a shy ray of sunlight peering between the clouds. This eventually turned into one of my favourite views of the day, as the sun rose over Grizzly Bear’s last set of songs.
As per usual, the second day came with more attractions, and once again choices had to be made. In order to get the full experience of some of the acts, I only managed to catch a glimpse of others. But before I headed to my favourite acts of that day, I managed to check the first ones at the Pitchfork Stage, the British “Yellow Days”, and with a quick run checked the first minutes of the powerful Latin voices behind “Ibeyi”, before heading towards the Seat stage to see “Grizzly Bear”.
Following the first day, which saw Tyler, the creator, the second day of the festival was taken over by strong names of the hip-hop scene, with “Vince Staples” and “A$AP Rocky” taking over the main stage. With a crowd divided between the diversity of attractions the day presented, what was visible was an abundant crowd of people, eager to check the sounds of both “Vince Staples” and “A$AP Rocky”.
The Breeders
The second concert of the day at NOS Stage was by the powerful women from the American band The Breeders. The sisters, Kim and Kelley Deal, alongside Josephine Wiggs and Jim Macpherson (drums), came to Primavera Sound to show us that the guitars-bass-drums formula is still not exhausted. The strong 90’s riffs are still an influence on today’s indie rock, and the band is now back on tour with a new album, *All Nerve (2017), with originals after a ten year hiatus.
In concert, Breeders played new and old songs, as well as Pixies songs ("Gigantic"), and during the classics such as “Cannonball”, “Off You” and “Drivin’ on 9”, the effect a few classics have on the crowd were visible by the palpable excitement in the ar. A memorable performance, fitting of the size of the MainStage of the festival.

Grizzly Bear
Kicking off with a sharp punctuality at the Seat Stage, the Brooklyn based Grizzly Bear was one of the concerts that I most antecipated. Despite being a long-time fan, this was my first opportunity to see them live. Their 5th album, which launched in the summer of 2017 (Painted Ruins), was a personal favourite from that year. The follow up, from the 2012 Shield, was also highly acclaimed by the critics, but that didn’t seem to garner much attention with the crowd that didn’t show up to the stage to check the concern at first. With a bit of a cold start, relying mostly on a fan based public, all it took was a few songs to catch the attention of the remaining undecided people hovering around the stage. “Loosing all sense” was the song that opened the night.
After that, everything seem to be made to make that night perfect, a beautiful sundown that painted the sky, when the vocalist and guitarist Edward Droste spoke some words to the audience saying that "they were afraid to play in a rainy festival but fortunately it was a beautiful start to the night”. By the time they played “two weeks”, it was already impossible to move around the crowd that finally were absorb in sound of the grizzly, but also charming bear.

Superorganism
This world based collective was consider one of the surprises of the festival, although their album is already acclaimed by the public, this live show was expected with a little of anxiety of how it could be on stage. But, well, as soon as the concert started, the anxiety gave place to the excitement flamed by the energy brought with their music. It didn’t took a long time to see the whole crowd, even those that weren’t familiar with the band, smiling, dancing and even some trying to sing along. Their pop music, filled with electronic and experimentalism, alongside the shy, but carismatic performance of the lead singer, Orono Noguichi and the three really performatic back up vocals and other three musicians completing the team at that night. With only one album out, the only problem that was left at the end of the concert is that it seemed that it has passed to fast.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra
Explosive. That might be the most fitting word to describe a concert led by Ruban Nielsen. Some might say that the setting of the Pitchfork stage was to small for a band so popular among the public, but the new setting of the stage, among the nature were the perfect fit to guide Ruban’s songs through the night. With a vast repertoire between their work, Unknown Mortal Orchestra had a whole crowd singing along and clapping with their best hits such "So Good At Being in Trouble", "Huneybee" and of course not forgetting "Multi-Love" from the album of the same name.
Despite not being really communicative towards the crowd, Ruban Nielsen conquered the crowd with his own show, playing his music, displaying his skills dominating his noisy and strong guitar solos. The lead of the Unknown Mortal Orchestra seemed to be having his time, drinking some shots, getting into the crowd to play and leaving a vibrating support at each song.

Fever Ray
At midnight, closing the day of the Seat Stage, we saw Karin Dreijer, who left the Knife and came back last year to her solo project, Fever Ray conquering the festival the help of a real female army. What we saw on stage, was a presentation filled with a art that carries a vast political and social satire. The choice of a exuberant figurine, the exaggerated muscled body, a coat that mimicked the skin of a bear, and Karin Dreijer, dressed as a character of a horror film. The highly theatrical and visual “creep show” was a trip that no one regretted to be part of.

The night went on with dance, driven by performances by DJs and music producers Helena Hauff, Levon Vincent and Marcel Dettmann (a the new electronic stage, the Primavera Bits and a with concert by the always Sam Shepherd, aka Floating Points at the Pitchfork Stage.
Day 3
The 7th eddition of Primavera Sound in Porto, finished on the 9th of June with a sold out night. And after days facing the uncertainty of the weather, the last day, the rain was the not so welcome guest, but not strong enough to hold the public back.
Because of the rain that persisted through the whole evening, raincoats and umbrellas filled the space. Either the public brought It home, either given by the festival organization, that did their best to ease the impact of the weather conditions. The solid line up of the last day explained why this was the mos expected day for most of the public. For now, before the next years line up come by, we hope that the rain would not be part of the festival on the 2019 edition.
With all eyes set on the expectance of the performance of Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, it was not easy to focus in the other attractions of the third and final day of the NOS Primavera Sound festival. The author of "Stagger Lee" and his band gave an amazing spectacle, under the pouring rain and leaving behind the sensation of that we were part of a unforgettable night.
In between the concerts, a good number of people decided to avoid the weather by taking refuge in an awning near the Primavera Bits stage, or the food quarters.On a day with a full line up, what seemed to be a race, was hard to follow all the concerts. Highlights go to Luis Severo, Kelela, Metá Metá, Nick Cave, The war on drugs and Abra.
KELELA
With all eyes on Nick Cave, it seemed that there weren’t any more interesting concerts, but there was. There was Kelela. She came up on the Super Bock stage at 6:50 pm. Originally from USA, the singer of Ethiopian descent, who released her first album (Take Me Apart) in late 2017. During her performance, she seemed overwhelmed by the public's interest. "It means so much to me that they are listening to me even in the rain," she said, and after fighting with the tears, she couldn’t stop showing her gratitude to the public. Overwhelmed by the attention given here, Kelela did not need to cry to convince the public l. The public was there to dance with her, despite the rain, despite the daytime hours. "LMK" was the theme chosen to open the concert.

Her act consisted of her and the DJ. What seemed to be a empty stage, was soon took over by the Kelela”s voice and dancing. Owner of an interesting voice for modern soul and R & B, Kelela was singing and dancing through her sensual music, exposing the public to this electronic groove that made everyone there dance. Themes like "Rewind", "Blue Light" and "A Message" left a good impression on the public that was there.

Metá Metá
On the main stage, at 19:50 had the Brazilians Metá Metá with their eclectic mix of musical genres. A good addition to the festival line up, that so far was really anchored in the American music, the Brazilian group seemed drink from a classical fountain, but at the same time taking a explosive, unexpected soundscapes, from funk-rock to improvisational music. With the day light still going on, their music were perfect to make everyone dance while fighting the cold weather that insisted to stay there.

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds
This was the biggest and most hypnotized crowd I ever saw at a festival. Make no mistake, people were there, and patiently waited under the rain for Nick Cave. His comeback to the stage of Primavera Sound Porto was a memorable night. But when its about Nick Cave, its easy to make everything sound big, but well deserved, this might the one of the strongest and best performer from the actual rock n roll scenery.
What he offer us, is more than just rock n roll, as a good storyteller, we can see how time added to what he can offer us. His latest work and personal stories added weight to the concert, his music is his own incarnation of the pains and poetry of living, and we saw this exposed on the main stage.
In the middle of the hurry to catch nice places for the The war on Drugs concert, I didn’t saw Nick Cave presentation till the end, but if the second half was as impressive like the first half, its totally understandable all the high expectations that surrounded this presentation.

The War On Drugs
My highlight of the day, and the reason I decided to cut half of the Nick Cave concert was The War on Drugs. Despite the weather conditions and some sound problems at the beginning of the concert, it took some themes to warm up the audience to the act of the band that had one of the best albums of 2017.

Kicking off with the excellent "Burning”, the whole concert was a verge in between the previous albums. The band is touring heavily in between the States and Europe, leaving behind a few concerts where we could observe the differences with the act that they played in Porto. Unlike what happened in other recent concerts of the group, which changes were added and even the way it plays the songs, there was room for themes from the previous album, Lost in the Dream - for example, "An Ocean in Between the Waves" - and for themes of the new album, like "Strangest Thing".
“A Deeper Understanding” (2017) reinforced the impact of the predecessors albums, and put the Philadelphia band on the Grammy Awards route. And despite the emotional load that still lingered on the tour after a big Nick Cave concert and the Bad Seeds, there were those who dances this melancholy but fast rock of Adam Granduciel.
