Joe Armon-Jones – Live @ Sala Clamores, Madrid (gr + eng)
Η πολλά υποσχόμενη νέα χρονιά ξεκίνησε δυνατά την περασμένη Πέμπτη, 30/01, στην αγαπημένη μας Sala Clamores, που για ακόμα μία φορά πλημμύρισε με φανατικούς του νέου κύματος της Βρετανικής jazz - και όχι μόνο.
Με μεγάλη μας χαρά παρευρεθήκαμε στο live ενός ακόμα ανερχόμενου (ή να πούμε πρόσφατα καθιερωμένου;) ταλέντου από την «αναβράζουσα» μουσική σκηνή του Λονδίνου, του πιανίστα/συνθέτη/παραγωγού και ιδρυτικού μέλους των Ezra Collective, Joe Armon-Jones. Φυσικά, της διοργάνωσης επιμελήθηκαν τα μέλη της ακούραστης κολεκτίβας Estrecho Cultural, που, σχεδόν ένα χρόνο από την πρώτη τους παραγωγή με τους εκπληκτικούς Ezra Collective, συνεχίζουν να αναταράσσουν τα μουσικά νερά στη Μαδρίτη. Τους ευχαριστούμε πολύ που μας κάλεσαν να απολάυσουμε αυτήν την εμπειρία και φυσικά να μοιραστούμε τις εντυπώσεις μας.

‘Εχοντας την ευκαιρία να δούμε τους Sons of Kemet και τη Nubya Garcia ζωντανά το περασμένο καλοκαίρι στο NOS Primavera Sound και, φυσικά, τους Ezra Collective κατά την επίσκεψή τους στη Μαδρίτη τον περασμένο Φλεβάρη, είχαμε καλούς λόγους να ενθουσιαστούμε με την ανακοίνωση της επικείμενης εμφάνισής του.
Και, αν η καλή χρονιά από τις καλές συναυλίες φαίνεται, εμείς κάναμε ιδανικό ποδαρικό, το οποίο ήταν μάλιστα αμοιβαίο, αφού είχαμε την τιμή να εγκαινιάσουμε την Ευρωπαϊκή περιοδεία του Joe Armon-Jones και της εξαμελούς παρέας του, που περιλαμβάνει αρκετές ακόμα στάσεις σε Βέλγιο, Ολλανδία και φυσικά Αγγλία, μεταξύ άλλων. Αφορμή της περιοδείας ήταν η κυκλοφορία της δεύτερης δισκογραφικής δουλειάς του, “Turn To Clear View” (Brownswood Recordings, 2019), με συμμετοχές από πληθώρα ταλαντούχων μουσικών που αξίζει να έχουμε υπόψη μας.

Η βραδιά είχε ήδη ξεκινήσει με ευοίωνες εκπλήξεις, πριν καλά-καλά περάσουμε το κατώφλι του venue, όταν είδαμε τη Nubya Garcia και τον James Mollison στην είσοδο. Ακόμα και χωρίς το στοιχείο της έκπληξης όμως, η εμφάνισή τους στη σκηνή σίγουρα μας ενθουσίασε. Συντροφεύοντας τους δυο σαξοφωνίστες, το εκλεκτό line-up συμπλήρωσαν ο Morgan Simpson (ντραμς) και η μοναδική φιγούρα του Niles "Asheber" Hailstones στα φωνητικά. Και φυσικά, ο Joe Armon-Jones στα πλήκτρα.

Το setlist μας ξενάγησε σε γνώριμα αλλά και ανεξερεύνητα μουσικά τοπία, μέσα από τον τελευταίο του δίσκο αλλά και από τον προηγούμενο, “Starting Today” (2018), με ένα κράμα από funk, dub, hip-hop και afro-beat όλα αρμονικά δεμένα στο κρυσταλλικό πλέγμα του είδους εκείνου της jazz που γεννήθηκε στο πολυπολιτισμικό χωνευτήρι που λέγεται Λονδίνο.
Η αρχή έγινε με το Try Walk With Me με τη συμμετοχή του Asheber, ο οποίος, σαν σαμάνος ρασταφάρι, μας υπνώτισε με τα υπέροχα φωνητικά του. Μια πιο «jazzy» μετάβαση με το To Know Where You’re Coming From και τα βιρτουόζικα σόλο από Garcia/Mollison άρχισαν να πρωταγωνιστούν˙ επιστροφή στο dub με ένα ακυκλοφόρητο κομμάτι, ξανά με τη φωνή του Asheber.

Είχαμε ήδη ζεσταθεί για τα καλά και οι γεμάτες ενέργεια εκτελέσεις μας προσκαλούσαν να συνέχισουμε το χορό - επιτόπιο λόγω έλλειψης χώρου μεν, ξέφρενο δε! Η θετική ενέργεια επι σκηνής αστείρευτη και πηγαία, με τον Armon-Jones να επιδίδεται σε παθιασμένες ταχυδακτυλουργίες πάνω στα πλήκτρα, χωρίς καμία όμως πρόθεση να μονοπωλήσει το ενδιαφέρον μας. Όπως κάθε jazz μπάντα που σέβεται τον εαυτό της, η ουσία βρισκόταν στη «συζήτηση», στη συνεργασία. Αυτή η αίσθηση ήταν η μοναδική πρωταγωνίστρια της βραδιάς.

Αλλά αν υπήρξε συμπρωταγωνίστρια, αυτή αναμφίβολα ήταν η μαγευτική Nubya Garcia, με το You Didn’t Care – και όχι μόνο – ειδικά αφιερωμένο σε όσους αδυνατούν να...ενδιαφέρονται σταθερά και αμείωτα!

Η ώρα κύλησε χωρίς να το πάρουμε είδηση και, όταν ο Asheber επέστρεψε στη σκηνή για να μας αποχαιρετίσει με το upbeat Starting Today, κοιτάξαμε απογοητευμένοι τα ρολόγια μας, ελπίζοντας μάταια να συνεχιστεί η γιορτή λιγάκι ακόμα. Μπορεί να μην εισακούστηκαν οι εκκλήσεις μας, αλλά ο επικοινωνιακότατος Joe Armon-Jones τήρησε την υπόσχεσή του και μας περίμενε κάτω από τη σκηνή για φωτογραφίες, κουβέντα και υπογραφές στα αντίγραφα του δίσκου του.
Και ενώ περιμένουμε την επόμενη συνάντησή μας μαζί του, μας παρηγορεί η είδηση ότι η Nubya Garcia θα επιστρέψει στη σκηνή του Clamores σε λιγότερο από ένα μήνα, με το supergroup της, Nérija.

The much promising new year made a great headstart last Thursday, 30/01, at our favorite Sala Clamores, which once more was flooded with new UK jazz scene fans – and those about to join them.
It was with great pleasure that we assisted the live show of yet another emerging (or, should we say, recently established?) talent right from the booming London scene, keyboardist/composer/producer and founding member of Ezra Collective, Joe Armon-Jones. Of course, the event was brought to us by the tireless members of Estrecho Cultural, who, almost a year after their very first production with the amazing Ezra Collective, continue to shake up live music scene in Madrid. We thank them for inviting us to enjoy this show, so that we are able to share our experience.

After having the chance to see Sons of Kemet and Nubya Garcia live last summer at NOS Primavera Sound and, of course, Ezra Collective during their first ever visit to Madrid last February, we had pretty good reasons to be excited at the announcement of the upcoming gig.
And, if the proverbial rainbow in the morning also applies to the year’s start, then it definitely gave us a fair warning and anything but musical draught lies ahead; plus, the good omens seem to be mutual in this case, since we had the honor to inaugurate the 2020 European Tour by Joe Armon-Jones and his companions, which includes quite a few more stops in Belgium, The Netherlands and the UK, among others. The reason behind this tour is the release of his latest studio album, “Turn To Clear View” (Brownswood Recordings, 2019), featuring a bunch of talented musicians that are definitely worthy of our attention.

The evening had already begun with a felicitous surprise, before entering the venue, when we took a glance of Nubya Garcia and James Mollison at the entrance. Even without the element of surprise, though, their appearance onstage triggered a great deal of enthusiasm. Along with the two tenor sax players, the exquisite line-up was rounded off by Morgan Simpson on the drums and the unique figure of Niles "Asheber" Hailstones on vocals. Last but not least, Joe Armon-Jones on the keyboards.

The setlist led us across familiar and untrodden musical landscapes, off his most recent studio album as well as the previous one, “Starting Today” (2018), with an alloy of funk, dub, hip-hop and afro-beat, all harmoniously brought together into the crystal structure that is the kind of jazz born in the multicultural melting pot called London.
First on the setlist, Try Walk With Me, featuring Asheber, who, like a rastafari shaman, mesmerized us with his brilliant voice. A jazzier transition with To Know Where You’re Coming From and the virtuosi solos by Garcia/Mollison took the lead; then back to dub with an unreleased track, again Asheber on vocals.

We’d already warmed up for good and the energized performances invited us to keep on dancing – or gracefully stomping, due to relative lack of space. The positive energy onstage was pure and unfailing, and Armon-Jones was performing passionately prestidigitation stunts over the keyboards, with no apparent intention, however, of monopolizing our attention. Instead, just like any respectable jazz ensemble the essence was in the “conversation” and partnership. This feeling was the one leading act of the show that evening.

But if there was to be a protagonist, this would probably be Nubya Garcia, in a remarkable You Didn’t Care – among others – especially dedicated to those who “don’t give a shit, and then they do, and they don’t...”!

Time slipped by without us realizing it, and when Asheber returned to the stage for an upbeat goodbye with Starting Today, we took a sad look at our watches, in vain hopes for the party to continue just a bit longer. Our pleads were not exactly heard, but, immediately afterwards, Joe Armon-Jones, communicative as always, kept his promise and waited for us off the stage for photos, chatting and record signing.
And while we look forward to our next encounter with him and his marvelous crew, we take comfort in the news that Nubya Garcia will be back at the stage of Clamores in less than a month, along with her supergroup, Nérija.
